unfinished sympathy/ ya mama

Naturalistic- closely imitating real life or nature/ based on the theory of naturalism in art or literature.

linear - progressing from one stage to another in a single series of steps

1) The song "unfinished sympathy" could be described as "naturalistic" because everyone that features in the video is acting very natural and getting on with their lives, even though the video was staged and all the people were actors and had roles to fulfil. the video was filmed in 1990 so the director's of the video would've had to get everything correct including the clothes, and scenery. the way all the people are so natural and going about their day sums up just what 'naturalistic' is. Fatboy slims "ya mama" is less naturalistic because so many out of the ordinary things are occurring, for example the fact that a dance tape is making people dance uncontrollably.  However Fatboy slim's "Ya mama" could be described as less naturalistic. one reason it could be described as unnatural is because in Carriacouan in the grenadines. also the two main characters in the video are from a 'hillbilly' or 'redneck' background. the main narrative of the video is two redneck men find a music tape that takes over your body and makes you dance uncontrollably when you play it. this would be a linear narrative because the videos story is presented in a logical and chronological manner. "Unfinished sympathy" wouldn't be described as a linear narrative because there isn't a story behind the music video, its just a shot of Shara Nelson walking through a populated town.

2) Fatboy slims "Ya mama" has a linear narrative because the video seems to have a start middle and end, evidence to show this is at the start of the video the redneck is staring at a picture of a beach while painting is ornaments. However, the video quickly changes focus to  chaos when they discover the tape. after that, the Hillbillies realise they can get money from the tape. it ends with one of the hillbillies getting put in prison. nevertheless at the end of the video the last shot is the hillbilly at the beach he was looking at in the picture. In the "Unfinished sympathy" video the narrative isn't linear, this is because throughout the whole video there is one shot of an African American middle aged women lip singing the song, however things happen in the background, for example we see a man with no legs on a skateboard and a native American man, because it was filmed on a street in California it just appears that people are getting on with their lives normally. The thing that shows that it doesn't have a linear narrative is that their is no story behind the music video.

3) In "Fatboy slims- Ya mama" there is a narrative disruption when the two redneck men discover the music tape. this is seen as a  narrative disruption because before they find the tape they are calm and quiet, not really communicating and then it quickly escalates. however when they find the tape the mood of the video goes from calm to chaotic and crazy. they do things such as run away from police and cause chaos throughout the small Caribbean town. this is done to make the video have more of an unnatural feeling and a  more fun and interesting view for the fans.
